Sustainability

We are committed to reducing our environmental impact as we know that the climate crisis will affect the most vulnerable in society and will be a major driver of conflict and forced displacement in the future. As a new start up, we are working hard to reduce our impact but we know there’s more that we can do to achieve our climate ambitions. What we promise is that we will always be transparent and will continue to find solutions to reduce our impact whenever we can afford to do so. Read on for a few of the initiatives we’re already taking.

Coffee

We carefully select who we work with to source your coffee based on whether they share our values. We currently are working with Falcon Coffees, a specialty green coffee trader sourcing from 26 different origins. We share Falcon’s ambition to improve the economic outcomes throughout the coffee supply chain and support their commitment towards environmental stewardship and social cohesion. Falcon already has some amazing environmental initiatives and projects from biodegradable packaging to training producers in biodiversity management and improving agricultural practices.

Packaging

Firebird recognises that packaging is one of the trickiest things to get right when it comes to reducing our environmental impact. We deliberately selected Dutch Coffee Pack for our pouches as all their packaging is CO2-neutral.
CO2-neutral means that the CO2 emissions released by producing the packaging are compensated by one of the carefully selected climate projects of Climate Neutral Group. These climate projects take place in coffee producing countries and offer opportunities for the local people, such as knowledge transfer, environmental improvement and stimulation of the local economy.

Roaster

Most coffee roasters use natural gas or electricity with pros and cons for each depending on who you talk with. We currently roast on a small electric roaster, the Aillio Bullet R1 V2. As with all electrical appliances, how the electricity is produced is the biggest factor affecting our emissions and the one we have very little control over.
